Colas Rail is selected by Network Rail for the MAFA Framework
Colas Rail has been selected by Network Rail to carry out works
to improve the rail infrastructure in one of the five regions
that make up the UK rail network under the Enhancements Multi
Asset Framework Agreement (MAFA).
The £753 million MAFA investment
program is to be achieved by March 2014. Colas Rail, working
with its joint venture partners, will deliver works in the
Western region; an area between Paddington, Bristol and South
Wales. Running until April 2014, the anticipated turnover for
this work is circa £200 million.
This win follows Colas Rails
earlier appointment to Network Rails first MAFA framework in
2009. Colas Rail was one of fourteen companies selected. Early
in 2011, in an effort to rationalize, Network Rail decided to
reduce the number of companies to five. After an intense
selection process, based on the ability to work in partnership,
Colas Rail has been chosen with four other companies.
Colas Rail successfully delivers
conventional and high output track renewals in the Western
territories.
Charles-Albert Giral, Colas Rails Chief Executive Officer,
Europe commented: I am delighted with the award. To be selected
in one of the three major regions is a significant vote of
confidence and ensures we can be at the forefront of a new
collaborative way of working with Network Rail.

AmeyColas deliver record breaking volumes
The AmeyColas track renewals team has successfully delivered nightly
volumes of 816 yards (747 metres), a record in this country for a track
renewals job. Never before has two miles of track been renewed in just
five days of 8.5 hour possessions.
The target for each night was 788 yards (722 metres). The AmeyColas team
was only given an 8.5 hour possession to complete the work, which is
slightly longer than the usual 8 hour possession, but with a demanding
60% more work to be done.
Work at the Wickwar worksite on the mainline from Bristol to Birmingham
was originally scheduled to be carried out over two weeks, however
because of the bad weather before Christmas the first week was lost.
Therefore the entire project had to be delivered over five midweek night
shifts between Monday the 21st and Friday the 25th of February.
The worksite makes up over two miles of ongoing track renewals work. The
route has been identified as a suitable candidate for the use of the
High Output, Track Relaying System (TRS), which is a specially designed
train that mechanically renews both rail and sleepers over significant
distances in a short amount of time. This cost effective technique of
working also allows the adjacent line to be open (ALO) letting rail
traffic pass along the route and supports Network Rails ambition for a
seven day railway causing minimal interruption to the Passenger and
Freight Train operating companies.
This achievement represents the very cutting edge of modern track
renewals construction technique and capability, and is an important
milestone in the development of railway construction in this country.

New Arrivals
Colas Rail is delighted with the arrival of the latest addition to our
On Track Plant fleet of 74947 a Principal S&C Plasser 08 4x4 Unimat
Tamper and a 73948, which has increased our fleet to 14 principal S&C
machines, which with our additional Compact and Plain Line machines and
other On Track machines provides Colas Rail with the largest modern On
Track Plant fleet in Europe.
These machines have the flexibility to work all types of S&C layouts in
the UK including modular designs and Plain Line track at the highest
levels of quality and efficiency. They have been specifically designed
to meet the future needs of Network Rail and benefit from the latest
technology which will deliver enhanced output in track quality with the
P700 control processor and the ability to record the output by the DRP
track output recording system. The machines have also been designed to
easily accept future upgrades if required by Network Rail, as space has
been allocated for the provision of additional hardware. Cabinets and
wiring looms have already been installed.
Safety and sustainability are fundamental requirements of these machines
where we are able to leverage our existing fleets proven design in terms
of driving, operations and maintenance whilst benefiting from improved
cab design, cameras, monitors and safety devices.
This latest investment demonstrates the commitment of Colas Rail to work
in partnership with Network Rail to ensure that we are able to not only
maintain but also upgrade the UK Rail Infrastructure.

Colas Rail installs a UK first
Working in partnership with Birse Metro, Colas Rail successfully
completed the works on the Dalston Weston Curve in June 2010.
The Dalston Curve project saw the first track installed in the UK using
Sonneville high attenuation blocks. The track was installed with tight
tolerances thanks to a track recording trolley enabling the track team
to position the track at the tenth of the millimetre. Most of the track
components are from continental manufacturers. This is a unique &
modern, continental piece of track successfully installed by Colas Rail.
Christophe Chassagnette, Director of Project Delivery, commented I am
very proud of the hard work and professionalism shown by our team
working on the Dalston Curve project and believe this demonstrates our
world class capability. We will continue to develop our relationship
with Birse Metro and Transport for London and look forward to working
with them again in the future
Colas Rails team effort and work ethics have been noted by Birse Metro
and the proactive approach was acknowledged and made for excellent
working relations with our client.

AmeyColas announced as preferred bidder for Network Rails c£250m
high output contract
AmeyColas has been announced as preferred bidder for the c£250m High
Output Track Renewals contract by Network Rail. This UK-wide five year
contract is extendable to seven years, with the potential for additional
volumes over this period. This will make AmeyColas the largest track
renewal provider in the country, cementing an already strong partnership
with Network Rail.
Currently AmeyColas provides conventional track renewals for Network
Rail in the Western and London North Western regions. This new contract,
together with the Track Enhancement Framework contract awarded earlier
this year, provides AmeyColas the opportunity to deliver on a national
scale.
The High Output Track Renewal contract is a means of delivering
increased renewals capacity, greater efficiency and improved track
quality in limited time slots. By providing both high output and
conventional track renewal services AmeyColas has generated greater
efficiencies for Network Rail through a one track solution.
Charles-Albert Giral, CEO of Colas Rail Ltd comments on the award This
is a massive vote of confidence by Network Rail in our capability to
deliver track renewals throughout the UK. We are delighted to contribute
to Network Rails vision of providing Britain with a safe, reliable and
efficient railway fit for the 21st century
Mel Ewell, CEO of Amey, said We are delighted to announce yet another
significant contract with Network Rail, particularly one which will have
such a significant impact on the delivery of rail improvement works
across the country.
The introduction of high output rail contracts has transformed the way
Britains railways are maintained. Not only is this method a large
technological step, it will also enable time efficiencies for Network
Rail, service providers such as AmeyColas, and the train operating
companies. Ultimately this work will have a positive impact on the
reliability of journey times for users of the rail network

Morgan Est/Colas Rail joint venture win award for best practice
The Morgan Est / Colas Rail joint ventures £180 million extension of
the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) has won a Best Practice Award at the
prestigious British Construction Industry Awards for the Woolwich
Arsenal Extension project.
The three-and-a-half year project which involved constructing a 2.5
kilometre extension, included civil engineering works, tunnelling,
piling and diaphragm walls, station building and mechanical and
electrical works, track work, signalling, communications and associated
rail systems.
Judges were particularly impressed by the continuous improvement
demonstrated by the joint venture, which helped deliver the project
eight weeks ahead of schedule and within budget.
Richard Pollard, Project Director for the JV, said We are proud to have
won this award. Our collaborative working from an early stage played a
key role in delivering this project successfully and delighting our
customer
Christophe Chassagnette, Project Manager for Colas Rail, added This was
a really exciting project with many challenges arising throughout the
construction period and the integration of the extension with the
existing railway.
To build and commission a railway under the Thames as well as a
sub-surface station in the middle of a live town centre, which
interconnects with a live Network Rail line and station was never going
to be easy and the sense of pride and achievement by everyone on the
team cannot be under estimated

regenerate the station in Edinburgh were awarded individually to each of
the firms and the contractors then worked together to deliver the £150
million project.
Julian Dunn, Managing Director, Projects, Colas Rail said This is a
fantastic result as it shows how partnership, trust and teamwork play a
vital role in any project, especially one of this size and profile
