  Project Highlights

At the outset of the project, the challenge faced by Colas Rail was to integrate the new project into the existing facility whilst maintaining the operational needs of what in effect is the UK’s second busiest railway station.

In this world heritage site the prime objective of the work is to relieve congestion by increasing the number of trains from 24 to 28 per hour, create two additional through lines, improve reliability and asset condition and provide disability access in accordance with modern legal requirements.

In addition to the works at Waverley Station, this project includes for an additional terminus platform and associated infrastructure work at Haymarket.

  Project Description

The work is programmed in eight distinct stages (key milestones) comprising a mix of permanent way, drainage, overhead line, mechanical and electrical and retail telecom activity, including a complete renewal on the west end throat, S&C renewal in Mound Tunnel and the installation of two new through lines.

It also includes major civil engineering and structures related activity comprising two new through platforms, remodelling of existing terminating platforms with associated canopies, installation of a mezzanine footbridge on piled foundations from Waverley Princes Street Steps entrance.
