Edinburgh Waverley

In this World Heritage Site, the prime objective of Colas Rail Ltd was:

(i)         to relieve congestion by increasing the number of trains from 24 to 28 per hour

(ii)        to create two additional through line

(iii)       to improve reliability and asset condition

(iv)       to provide disability access in accordance with modern legal requirements.

The works at Waverley Station include an additional terminus platform and associated infrastructure work at Haymarket.

The work is programmed in eight distinct stages (key milestones). These comprise a mix of permanent way, drainage, overhead line, mechanical and electrical and retail telecom activity, including a complete renewal on the west end throat, S&C renewal in Mound Tunnel and the installation of two new through lines.

It also includes major civil engineering and structures related activity comprising two new through platforms, remodelling of existing terminating platforms with associated canopies and installation of a mezzanine footbridge on piled foundations from the Waverley Princes Street Steps entrance.

In addition, installation of escalators and lifts, re-glazing of the Waverley Station train-shed roof over the area of the two new platforms and refurbishment and repairs to the train-shed roof support walls (known as the Balmoral and Klondyke walls).

The Edinburgh Waverley project is on programme and was completed in February 2008.
