Position:-
Planning Manager
Location:- Manchester
Reporting to:- General
Manager, Northern Regional Business.

Purpose of job
As a key member of the Management
team you will ensure that Project
Control Guidelines are followed.
Your role as Planning Manager is to
manage via an agreed EPS & WBS the
project plans for the Northern
Regional Business of Colas Rail
Limited. Providing timely reporting
of cost progress, scheduling
information to identify efficient
delivery of projects and give early
warning to the General Manager of
remedial actions to be taken.
Key accountabilities
Support the General Manager in all
aspects of Project Controls, Project
Programming, & Resource Management
Define & Control the Project
Control Guidelines & the Project
Programming process for Projects,
making sure that appropriate Project
Management principles are adopted.
Define & Control a Strategic
Resource Demand & Supply plan.
Publish periodic Resource forecasts
against the Business Plan.
Define & Control the Resource
Allocation process to be used by the
Group.
Manage the operation of the
Project Control process, ensuring a
regular project update cycle is
maintained.
Ensure a consistent and routine
Programme Reporting strategy is in
place that meets the needs of the
Group.
Supports continuous process
improvement and contributes to the
Process Improvement Group.
Agree competence standards for
relevant works and ensure systems
are in place such that staff with
correct competence levels are
employed.
Provide interface and liaison
between planning and commercial
departments.
Ensure Project Controls principles
are understood by the project team
Advise on appropriate selection of
support tools
Ensure Commissioning dates are
registered in Network Rails
Commissioning Diary.
To be lead planner within project
team providing a project planning
service to the Northern Regional
Business
Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge
and Experience
Professional qualifications in
Engineering and/or Project
Management desirable.
Above average competence with
Excel spreadsheets
Reasonably literate in the use of
other Windows packages (e.g.
Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft
Project 2000/2, Word)
Experience in Engineering Project
Management delivery, Project
Controls, Project Planning, Resource
Management, preferably in the rail
industry. Experience in Engineering
Project Management delivery, Project

industry.
Experienced at building and
managing teams
Good understanding of the
principles of Project Controls
(including Earned Value Management &
Project Planning) is essential.
Excellent working knowledge of
Primavera P3 & P3e
Self motivated, with strong
influencing & mentoring skills and
good attention to detail.
Other information
Must be willing and able to take
